Tri-Provincial Trophy

An Event Sponsored by the Costa Blanca & Costa Del Sol News Group

6th -9th September , 2006 - Indalo BC, Almeria

Report and Photos by Diane Chambers

This annual event was held at Indalo Bowls Club, Mojacar, from 6th -9th September; between bowlers who had travelled from Costa Almeria, Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol. Each team was made up of 6 x rinks, twenty four bowlers in total and played each other twice. The winning team held the highest number of shots.

CostaDelSolRevellers.jpg (66590 bytes)The Organisers are extremely grateful to 10 comparatively new Bowlers from Benalmadena B.C. who opted to “test their skills” against the two more experienced regions. They performed exceptionally well and it is a credit to Nick Cole, and the more senior Members of the Club, that they bowled with less than one year’s experience under their belt. The strong rink of Mike & Gillian Goodwin and Derek & Mary Hilton performed outstandingly with three excellent wins and certainly denied Costa Blanca first place in two tightly contested matches.

Tony Frowd and Murray Johns, playing with new bowlers from Benalmadena Bowls Club, Mary Harris and John Hicks, also recorded three wins, and only lost their first match by 2 shots. An exceptional effort!

Dennis & Wendy Wood, Roger Bennett & Harriett Foxwell, Dennis Humpleby & Diane Chambers provided considerable encouragement and help to their ‘newer’ bowlers whilst Trevor Burgin teamed up with two “Crown Green” friends from Barnsley to provide the nucleus of the last rink. Thank you all for your efforts and commitment.

The event was ultimately won, for by the “home team” –Costa Almeria who beat the Costa Blanca by only 12 shots overall and, an exceptional effort in the final game on Saturday morning by Costa Del Sol robbed the Costa Blanca of victory.

Caroline McFarlane of the Costa.Blanca News, S.L. presented the trophy to John Colquhoun, Captain of the Costa Almeria team.

A fabulous three course meal, sponsored by C.B. News, S.L. and superbly organised by John Colquhoun of Indalo Bowls Club, was held at Bar Musica Musica in Mojacar with a Karaoke show, which gave some of the bowlers the opportunity to display their other talents and let their hair down after four gruelling games in exceptionally hot temperatures.

Well done to everyone who travelled to represent their area. We made many friends and the Trophy is sure to be “keenly contested” for many years to come and we thank the hosts, Indalo Bowls Club, for their warm hospitality
