Spanish National
Championships 2006 Finals - John Carr, "Sur in English"
Pam the
only Cole in the finals but Nick’s club takes its first national title!
Considering the
relatively low entry from the Costa del Sol, (30 plus out of a total of 470),
the Malaga clubs managed to make a considerable impact at the 2006 Spanish
National Championships, held from 13th – 27th May at
Southern Alicante and principally sponsored by Offshore Money Managers, (OMM).
This year the
opening ceremony and all the finals were staged at a single venue, the
impressive Emerald Isle BC, a great improvement on 2005, when three clubs shared
the honours. Helped by very fine weather, the organisation went well, although
there were a few quirky decisions on rink deployment and times. (Santa Maria BC
pair, Denise Davis and Pamela Hatton, had to play their unannounced finals match
the day before the actual finals day, amid a green full of semi-finals matches!
In the ladies singles semi-finals discipline Erica Hooper played on rink 1 and
Pam Cole rink 7 on an otherwise empty green, while the other two semi-finals
were located at another venue!)
The outstanding
result for the Malaga clubs was the winning of the Men's pairs title by Kevin
Bloe and Mike Detheridge by narrowly defeating Keith Jones and David Dean, Lemon
Tree BC. On the last end Kevin played an outstanding skip’s bowl to remove the
opposition’s shot bowl, to which a very much in-form Keith Jones was unable to
replace with his last bowl. The result prevented Keith from repeating last
year’s triple title achievement and gave new club Benalmadena BC their first
national honour. This presented club manager, Nick Cole, with some consolation,
as he himself was obliged to adopt the unfamiliar role of spectator on finals
day.
Meanwhile
“Mum”, Pam Cole, Mijas BC, carried the pride of the Costa del Sol on her
shoulders in the ladies singles final against Sheila Stead, Greenlands BC.
Pam’s excellent form in the earlier rounds appeared to make her favourite
amongst the neutral spectators. However, Sheila, demonstrated great skills to
win a very close and entertaining final, thereby taking the record with three
national singles titles.
Denise Davis and
Pamela Hatton, rounded off a successful tournament by playing an extremely close
game against Chris Evans and Sheri Fletcher, Javea Green BC, unfortunately
losing by a single shot.
Nick Cole,
Benalmadena BC, appeared to be set on reaching the Men's singles final after
beating John Carr, Benavista BC, 21-20, in the quarter final. However, at 20 all
in the semi-final, his opponent, Len Fisher, just managed to outdraw Nick’s
shot bowl in the semi-final. As often happens, the Men's final turned to be very
much a one way affair, with Avalon Man of the Tournament and reigning champion,
Keith Jones, dominating the match against Len throughout.
At the presentation
national trophies were presented to winners & finalists by Robert Seaton of
OMM, supported by Bill Crookston, OMM, Gillian Mills and Tracey
Tempest of Avalon, Barry Latham & Bryan Redington, of the Spanish
Nationals committee.
