Benavista Summer Pairs

Benavista Summer Pairs is the first competition of the new season on the Costa del Sol. Sponsored by Absolute Windows it attracted 25 pairs from up and down the coast.

The first day was extremely hot and took its toll of the players. By the end of the second day, which was just as hot, all the home club's players had been eliminated. The semi-finals were to be played by Tony Frowd and Murray Johns from Mijas and Kevin Bloe and Mike Detheridge from Benalmadena. The other semi-final was to be between Jimmy & Christine Taylor from Mijas and Dorrien Ives and Dennis Humpleby from Mijas. The semi-finals started at 1pm on the Friday, with the final following on at 4pm. After 2 interesting matches the final was to be between Kevin Bloe and Mike Detheridge of Benalmadena BC and Dorrien Ives and Dennis Humpleby of Mijas BC.

The standard of play was very high in the final with both teams holding each other to just one point each end for most of the match. At the end of the 14th end the teams were equal on 9 points. On the 15th Dorrien and Dennis picked up 3 points which was quickly redressed on the next end by Kevin and Mike scoring 3. So the whole match rested on the last 2 ends. Kevin and Mike scored another 3 on the 17th end. but Dorrien and Dennis only managed to score 2 on the final end, so Kevin Bloe and Mike Detheridge were the winners and the final score was 15 - 14.

The prize money was presented by Benavista Bowls Club Captain Mike Carpenter, as the sponsors Absolute Windows representative was unable to attend.
