BENALMADENA OPEN PAIRS A MAJOR SUCCESS
The first staging of this Pairs Tournament was generously sponsored by
PETER MALE FINANCIAL SERVICES of Benalmadena and was well supported by Bowlers from the Mijas Costa region.
Played on a "round-robin" basis with FULL Games throughout, Group Winners and the 6 best Group Runners-up, progressed through to the knock-out stages. The Group stages produced some quality Bowling and very competitive Games as every pairing fought to retain their interest in the Competition.
There were, as always, a number of instances where the "form-book" was upset and this trend was maintained throughout as likely Winners fell by the wayside. Three Quarter Final Matches were decided on the last end and ultimately we had two finely balanced Semi-Finals to savour.
The "form team" was Frank & Pauline Ball and they took on Diane Chambers & Geoff
Edgington, two Bowlers who first played together as part of United Friends Team in the Summer League. The Ball's won 12 of the 18 ends but only won by 4 shots as their opponents strongly contested each end.
The other Semi-Final pitched together two Pairs who came out of the same Group in qualification. Denise & John Davis, having beaten Sue Westoby & Phil Allen in the Group Game, were slight favourites and they bowled exceptionally well. However, we witnessed an excellent display of Bowling from Sue, the English Indoor Pairs Champion, who dominated the latter stages of the contest to take them through.
The Final was not disappointing and was always in doubt as both Pairs tried to gain the initiative. The "Skips" regularly conceded the Mat to their opponents and the "Heads" were tight. The exception was a loose 15th end where nerves seemed to get the better of all Players, and it was here that Sue & Phil established a 3 shot lead for the only time in the Match.
However, Frank & Pauline then fought back to level at 15-15 to set up a grandstand finish going into the last end. What a climax it was as both Pauline and Phil had set up match winning opportunities for the "Skips". It was Sue & Phil who held out to win by one shot in an exciting Final watched by a very large audience.
PRESENTATIONS :-
Prior to the Presentation, Murray Johns asked Lynne Metcalfe to conduct the draw for this year's League Cup Competition in which ALL eight Clubs on the Coast are participating. The draw resulted in the following Quarter Final pairings :-
Los Amigos v Superbowl Santa Maria v Miraflores
Belplaya v Mijas Benalmadena v Benavista
Following this Murray thanked Peter Brack, Marjorie Johns and Jim Neilson for sharing the Umpiring duties and to the Players for their excellent time-keeping, sportsmanship and camaraderie throughout.
Martin Antoney, on behalf of Peter Male, expressed his pleasure at being part of an excellent, well organised Tournament and Alison Marshall ( Business Development Manager for the
Leeds Building Society ) presented Cash Prizes to the Finalists and losing Semi-Finalists.
Club Chairman, Clive Montaut, expressed his sincere thanks to the sponsors for their financial commitment to the Club and to the 15 Lady Members who had "fed and watered" everyone throughout the 6 days.
He thanked Murray Johns in his role as "acting" Competition Secretary for ensuring the Tournament was a success and said he had never had to become involved due to the excellent organisation and administration.
The day concluded with Clive, Alison and Martin conducting the Raffle Prize Draw. Quality Prizes had been donated by Members and local Businesses and Clive thanked everyone for their generosity.
